Fructo Oligosaccharides Prebiotic Blend

Chicory blended with Mesquite, Burdock root, and Yucca

FOS Prebiotic Blend is a blend of Chicory, Mesquite, Burdock Root, and Yucca. Prebiotic food is an excellent source of inulin, a non-glycemic beneficial food that aids intestinal tract probiotics. Soothing and nutritive, FOS Blend assists with Vitamin B production and vitamin assimilation, lowers cholesterol, and increases mineral bioavailability for greater nutrient absorption.

Chicory is one of approximately 36,000 plant species worldwide containing a class of compounds called fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) also called fructans, or non-digestible oligosaccharides. Chicory contains fructooligosaccharides (FOS) compounds which are beneficial prebiotics. The most important of these prebiotics is inulin (Chicory contains over 90% inulin), a non-digestible polysaccharide fiber that encourages the growth of beneficial intestinal flora.

FOS has gained attention for its health-promoting benefits such as prebiotics, substances that can reach the colon intact. They ferment as food for beneficial bacteria known as probiotics. Increased intestinal fermentation results in better nutrient absorption from the foods we eat, and helps in the production of vitamins, primarily the B vitamins and vitamin K, and in the production of enzymes. By encouraging friendly bacteria, FOS fermentation helps to suppress other, harmful, bacterial species.  Additional health benefits include alleviation of constipation or diarrhea and increasing the stool mass for better regularity, protecting the liver from the overwork of cleaning out a colon made toxic by putrefying matter, increasing the bioavailability of minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, iron, zinc, copper, and helping to regulate a balanced cholesterol level and blood pressure.

Chicory, considered then a reserve carbohydrate and dietary fiber, is widely versatile—it can be used in desserts, beverages, cereals, nutritional bars, yogurts, bakery goods, and, since it is non-glycemic, as a sugar replacement that is safe for diabetics. It helps to control the glucose intolerance of hyperglycemia. It nicely enhances the texture of food, which is why it is so commonly used. In addition to, and because of, all the health benefits already mentioned, it is also useful in weight management programs as it helps generate the heat of metabolism.

Mesquite is rich in minerals, protein, soluble fiber, and slow-acting carbohydrates. It is used traditionally in the Southwest of the United States. Mesquite is a natural sweetener and adds flavor and aroma to cuisine. Its slow, steady rate of absorption into the bloodstream helps balance and control blood sugar.

Mesquite provides wonderful benefits, including flavor and aroma, to many dishes. It is an antifungal, antimicrobial, and antispasmodic. It is used in first aid as a paste for stings, scrapes, cuts, and insect bites. It helps stop excessive bleeding and fevers.

Mesquite contains approx. 1/3 soluble fiber, and is a slow-acting carbohydrate. It therefore helps balance and control blood sugar by its slower, steady rate of absorption into the bloodstream. Diabetes is a decline in glucose tolerance. Mesquite is an antidiabetic natural sweetener (often made into a porridge) which, because it contains fructose, provides effective use of insulin metabolism, plus it is high in fiber. Its glycemic index is 25. Its fat content is at 3-1/2%.

Mesquite is mineral-rich, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, sulfur, manganese, and other valuable trace minerals. Mesquite averages 14-–6% protein. it is a grounding, balancing, and nutritive contribution to the body.

Burdock Root benefits the kidneys, is an anti-inflammatory, and is a powerhouse of antioxidants. It contains flavonoids and polyphenols. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, particularly for relieving coughs and colds and as a diuretic.

Yucca is a good source of fiber which promotes regular bowel movements and improves digestion. Yucca contains Saponins which have anti-inflammatory effects. It contains antioxidants and is a good source of potassium and other minerals. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Note: We also sell Chicory and Mesquite by the pound.
